Museo naval submarino O' Brien

The museo naval submarino O'Brien is a former submarine that now serves as a floating museum on the Calle Calle River in Valdivia. Visitors can walk through narrow passages and see the sleeping quarters, control rooms and engine compartments that show how sailors lived during their underwater missions.

The submarine was built in Scotland in 1971 and arrived in Chile five years later, where it served in the Chilean Navy until 2001. After being decommissioned, the municipality of Valdivia converted the vessel into a museum that opened to visitors in 2010.

Tours take place in small groups of up to twelve people, with tickets sold on the same day in the morning. Comfortable non-slip shoes are recommended, and people with claustrophobia should consider that the spaces are very tight.

The submarine is one of only three in South America now used as museums. The torpedo rooms and captain's cabin remain in original condition, offering visitors a rare glimpse into naval technology from the seventies.
