Maggie's Dundee, building in United Kingdom
Maggie's Dundee is a support center located next to Ninewells Hospital, designed to help people with cancer and their families. The building was created by renowned architect Frank Gehry and features curved walls and a flowing timber and stainless steel roof without any straight lines.
The building opened in September 2003 as the first new Maggie's center worldwide and was designed by Frank Gehry's architecture firm. It received the Building of the Year award from the Royal Fine Art Commission in 2004, establishing it as a significant work of contemporary architecture.
The center was named after Maggie Keswick Jencks, who pioneered the concept of creating supportive spaces for cancer patients and their families. This reflects a broader vision of how design and community can provide comfort during life's most challenging moments.
The center sits next to the hospital with ample parking and an automatic barrier, plus a nearby bus stop with frequent services. The building is fully accessible for wheelchairs, and visitors can drop in anytime without needing to book ahead.
This was Frank Gehry's first building in the United Kingdom and helped establish his reputation for distinctive architecture worldwide. The roof design mimics the folds of a concertina, rising and falling to create visual rhythm when viewed against the water of the Firth of Tay.
