Les Bains jaunes
Les Bains Jaunes is a natural hot spring in Saint-Claude located at nearly 950 meters elevation in Guadeloupe's volcanic region. The water flows from the Soufrière massif into two natural basins, maintaining a temperature of about 30°C, with water depth ranging from 1.3 to 1.6 meters depending on the basin.
The basins were constructed by military personnel during the 19th century, with stone pathways still visible today. The site's origins lie in volcanic activity from the nearby Soufrière volcano, which has fed thermal waters to this region for millennia.
The springs serve as a gathering place where hikers and locals pause to soak after mountain walks. The site has a simple, informal character where people come purely to rest and enjoy the natural warmth without commercial infrastructure.
Visit early in the morning around 8 AM when the site is quietest and parking is readily available. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground can be slippery from algae, and bring a towel and change of clothes as facilities are minimal.
Since 2023, submerging your head is prohibited due to potentially dangerous amoebae in the warm water that can cause rare but serious infections. This unusual restriction means visitors experience the springs as a shoulder-deep soak rather than a traditional swimming experience.
