TeamLab BioVortex
The teamLab BioVortex is a large exhibition space in southern Kyoto featuring over fifty art installations spread across four floors. The artworks use light, sound, and movement to create environments that respond to visitors' presence and actions.
The project opened in 2025 as Japan's largest teamLab exhibition, expanding the collective's presence following successful installations worldwide. It demonstrates the evolution of teamLab's concept of how artworks emerge through environmental interaction and visitor movement.
The BioVortex continues Kyoto's tradition of blending artistic heritage with contemporary innovation. Visitors experience how digital art creates new forms of creative expression, reflecting the city's long history of evolving artistic practices.
Exploring the space takes at least three hours to fully enjoy all installations, and comfortable shoes are recommended for extended walking and exploration. Photography is permitted but flash and large equipment are not allowed to preserve the installations and respect other visitors' experiences.
The installation of massless sculptures features suspended structures with no visible support that reform if touched or damaged, showing how artworks can exist through their environment alone. These works stand apart from traditional sculpture because they dissolve boundaries between art and space itself.
