Penkenbahn
The Penkenbahn is a cable car in Mayrhofen that carries visitors up to 1790 meters above sea level on Penken mountain. The modern system features cabins holding up to 32 people and is distinguished by its curved structure, the first of its kind globally to incorporate this engineering design.
The Penkenbahn was built in 2015 and replaced an older cable car that held only 15 passengers. This new installation represents a major modernization in mountain access for the Penken area.
The Penkenbahn connects the town of Mayrhofen to Penken mountain and serves as a starting point for hiking and mountain biking during summer months. The cable car is woven into the local mountain culture, where outdoor pursuits shape how people spend their time year-round.
The facility is designed to be accessible to everyone and allows people with various needs to use it easily, including transport for mountain bikes. It operates daily from morning through late afternoon, with extended hours during the summer season from May to October.
The Penkenbahn holds the distinction of being the first cable car in the world to feature a curved section, spanning approximately 50 meters and installed at a slight angle. This design allows the system to navigate challenging terrain while ensuring a smooth ride for passengers.
