Chocolatería La Nena
La Nena is a café in the Gràcia neighborhood of Barcelona, known for its hot chocolate, homemade cakes, and a menu that is entirely alcohol-free. Simple wooden tables, light marble counters, ceramic tiles, and old photographs on the walls give the space an informal, lived-in look.
The café was founded by Pep, a cook who had previously worked in Paris and Barcelona and wanted to open a place where families could gather without alcohol. He was also among the first in the area to ban smoking, well before it became a legal requirement.
La Nena is one of the few places in Gràcia where parents with young children feel as welcome as regulars stopping in alone. The toys left around the room and the worn decor give the space a domestic feeling that fits naturally into the neighborhood's daily rhythm.
The café stays open throughout the day without a midday break, so a visit fits into almost any schedule. The nearest metro stops, Joanic and Fontana, are both within walking distance and make getting there by public transport straightforward.
Pep is often present in the room himself, moving between tables in a way that gives the place the feeling of a private home rather than a business. For many regulars, his presence is itself the reason they keep coming back.
