Konzelmann Estate Winery is a winery on the Lake Ontario shoreline in Niagara-on-the-Lake that produces wines and offers tastings. The family's winemaking tradition began in 1893 in Uhlbach, Germany, before Herbert Konzelmann arrived in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1984. The founder recognized the potential of the local land and lake climate for grape growing and established the winery as a producer of award-winning wines.
The name Konzelmann comes from the founding family who brought their German winemaking tradition to Canada. Visitors can see today how this European heritage shapes the way the winery operates and the wines it produces.
The winery sits directly on the lake with parking and open tasting rooms that are easy to walk through. Visitors should allow enough time to enjoy the various experiences, from brief tastings to longer tours and private dome sessions.
In 2008, the winery's Vidal Icewine earned recognition in the Wine Spectator Top 100 list - the first such honor for a Canadian winery. The frozen-grape dessert wine is still served today in a chocolate cup, making the tasting a special experience.
