Espaces d’Abraxas
Espaces d'Abraxas is a large residential complex in Noisy-le-Grand composed of three main structures: the Palacio, the Arch, and the Theater. These buildings feature unusual forms inspired by classical architecture, with massive geometric structures, arches, and multiple levels arranged around central courtyards.
The complex was designed and built between 1978 and 1985 by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill as a social housing project meant to create a diverse living community. The design merges neoclassical forms with modernist ideas, reflecting the architectural thinking of that era.
The complex was designed as a living space for diverse residents, with shared areas and terraces built for community interaction. Today inhabitants occupy the homes and shape daily life in this unusual neighborhood.
Visits work best during guided tours led by residents, lasting roughly ninety minutes, which offer access to the buildings and insights into daily life there. Tours are organized during special events like the Heritage Days and provide a safer way to explore the complex.
The complex has been featured in well-known films such as Hunger Games and Brazil, making it popular with filmmakers drawn to its surreal quality. Its unusual architectural form creates the impression of a fictional or futuristic city.
