WWF Policoro Herakleia
WWF Policoro Herakleia is a protected coastal area in Basilicata featuring forests, dunes, and wetlands. The reserve is home to more than 170 bird species, sea turtles, and other wildlife living across different habitats including willows, shrubs, and grasslands.
The area was once home to the ancient city of Herakleia, whose ruins are still visible today. Over centuries, the forest was reduced as nearby settlements expanded, yet the remaining land continues to serve as a vital refuge for many species.
The park is named after the ancient city of Herakleia that once stood in this area. Visitors can observe how nature and human history coexist in this coastal landscape today.
Trails throughout the reserve are easy to walk and pass through diverse landscapes with dunes and natural vegetation. Visitors can explore on foot or by bicycle, with guided walks offered on weekends and during summer months.
The reserve runs a specialized rescue center for injured and entangled sea turtles and other wildlife. Volunteers work to heal sick animals and release them back to the wild, and visitors can learn about this work through guided excursions.
