Borgo Antico di Trivento
The Borgo Antico di Trivento is a historic neighbourhood built on a hilltop above the Trigno river valley in Molise region. Narrow winding streets of stone climb upward past old houses and lead to religious buildings including the cathedral of San Nazario and the church of Santa Croce, with a famous 19th century stone staircase connecting the upper areas to San Nicola.
The site became a key location for successive civilisations due to its strategic position above the Trigno valley. The cathedral of San Nazario was built atop an early Christian crypt that once contained a pagan temple dedicated to Diana, connecting multiple layers of history.
The neighbourhood is known for wool crafting traditions passed down through generations, especially the colourful wool decorations created each year for Christmas. These handmade artworks showcase the community's commitment to preserving local skills and celebrating together.
The neighbourhood is accessed entirely on foot via paved streets with numerous stone steps that may challenge those with mobility issues. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time to explore the narrow alleys, fountains, and quiet corners at a leisurely pace.
The famous stone staircase leading to the church is said to have exactly 165 steps according to local legend, one for each day of the year, and visitors often count them while climbing. This local story transforms the simple ascent into a playful ritual connecting numbers with tradition.
