Alto do Couto
Alto do Couto is a nature park in the Lugo region of Galician Spain that spans different elevations and offers several walking trails through native forests. The park begins at a bridge over the Lor River and passes through dense conifer woodlands, open meadows, and historic ruins like Castillo do Carbedo before reaching multiple viewpoints at higher altitudes.
The area was traditionally used for farming and timber collection, with old stone buildings and the ruined Castillo do Carbedo serving as evidence of this heritage. The region has been shaped by this rural way of life for generations.
The park is best explored with sturdy hiking boots, and visitors should bring plenty of water and provisions since infrastructure is limited. The main route takes about five and a half hours, with additional hikes to viewpoints adding a few more kilometers.
A small spring called Fontes do Cervo lies hidden near the end of the route and offers a welcome refreshment on the return journey. This quiet water source in the midst of nature is often overlooked, yet it shows how natural water cycles sustain this mountain landscape.
