Mutrikuko portua
Puerto de Motrico is a harbor in the heart of the small town of Mutriku on the northern coast, where boats and small ships come and go throughout the day. The port offers about 301 mooring spots for boats up to 14 meters long, modern facilities like showers and cranes, and direct access to the town center.
The harbor was first mentioned in the 12th century and has had stone docks since the early 1600s that could accommodate ships carrying up to 300 tons. Located in a naturally protected bay, it developed into one of the oldest ports on the northern coast and was strengthened through several upgrades to its protective structures.
The port is woven into the identity of this small town, where fishing and boating have been part of daily life for generations. When you walk along the dock, you see local fishermen and boat owners going about their work, keeping maritime traditions alive in their daily routines.
The port is well maintained and easily accessible from the town center, with modern amenities like gas, showers, and parking nearby. Note that the maximum water depth is 3 meters (10 feet) and the northeast orientation means wind often comes from that direction.
The harbor is home to an experimental wave energy plant with 16 turbines that has been generating electricity from ocean motion since 2006. This facility was a pioneering attempt to make the port more environmentally friendly and sustainable for the future.
