The Historic Center of Sintra is a neighborhood of narrow winding streets and traditional buildings spread across a hillside terrain. The architecture mixes simple facades with detailed stonework, while red tiled roofs and thick stone walls define the character of the area.
The center developed from 1147 onward after Christian forces reclaimed Sintra from the Moors. Over centuries, it served as a summer residence for kings and queens who built palaces and fortified structures that shaped Portuguese heritage and power.
