Weingut PRIMUS
Weingut Primus is a wine estate with guest house in Straß in Styria, Austria, situated in the hills on shell limestone and Opok soil. The operation includes vineyard cultivation, a tasting room, guest accommodations, and a small wine tavern for visitors.
The family acquired the property in 1913 and named it Zieregg, where it has remained in family ownership ever since. The current brothers Christian and Thomas Polz took over in 1998 and gave it the name Primus in 1985, while continuously expanding the vineyard land through purchases in South Styria and Slovenia.
The name Primus means "the first" and reflects the family's commitment to putting craft quality at the center of their work. Visitors today experience a wine house that lives local traditions and treats guests as part of the family rather than just customers.
Visitors should call ahead to arrange tastings or overnight stays, as the operation is small and advance notice is preferred. Directions are best followed from highway signs rather than navigation, and the location sits away from busy roads in a quiet setting.
The brothers deliberately divide their roles: Christian handles winemaking while Thomas manages the vineyards and marketing, a division of labor that has worked well for decades. This clear specialization has allowed them to maintain the highest quality standards despite being intentionally tiny.
