Toll station Malta Hochalmstraße
The Malta Hochalmstraße toll station is a fee collection point at the start of a mountain road that climbs through winding curves and rocky terrain toward Austria's highest dam. The 14.4 km drive passes waterfalls and steep cliffs, offering views of mountains and valleys as it ascends to the Kölnbreinsperre.
The Hochalmstraße was built as an access road to the Kölnbreinsperre dam, which was constructed in the 1970s to generate power for the region. The toll station was later established to help cover the road's maintenance costs through visitor fees.
The toll station marks the gateway to a beloved mountain route that draws visitors to experience the high peaks and alpine landscape. The road itself has become part of local identity as a key way for people to access the wilderness and explore the region's natural beauty.
The toll station operates seasonally from May through October when the road is snow-free and accessible. Visitors should arrive prepared with fuel and warm clothing, as temperatures at higher elevations are noticeably cooler than in the valley below.
Each summer in July, a motorcycle blessing ceremony takes place at the Kölnbreinsperre where bikers bring their machines for a special gathering and blessing. Some adventurous visitors also experience bungee jumping from the dam itself, with a free fall of about 165 meters over the valley below.
