Nature Park Geschriebenstein- Rechnitz
The Nature Park Geschriebenstein covers approximately 8,500 hectares across Austria and Hungary, with Geschriebenstein at 884 meters as the region's highest peak. Over 500 kilometers of marked trails, several educational paths, a botanical center, and themed routes including a wine trail and stone trail guide visitors through forests, meadows, and rolling hills.
The park was established in 1996 as the region's first transnational nature reserve, connecting protected areas across Austria and Hungary. The land was historically shaped by traditional crafts such as lime burning and charcoal production, whose remains and heritage trails visitors can still explore today.
The park serves as a meeting place where visitors connect with the local landscape and its traditions. Guided walks, seasonal events, and themed paths help people learn about regional plants, traditional crafts, and wildlife, making it a space where nature education is woven into everyday experiences.
The visitor center in Rechnitz provides maps, trail information, and practical advice for planning hikes and bike routes through the park. Most paths are well-marked and easy to follow, making it simple for visitors of different abilities to explore at their own pace and create a full day of activities.
The Margarethenwarte observation tower on Geschriebenstein reaches 31 meters high and offers views extending to the Alps and the Vienna Basin on clear days. This shared structure with Hungary provides a vantage point where visitors can see both sides of the border in a single panoramic sweep.
