Naturpark Karwendel
Naturpark Karwendel is a large protected area in the Karwendel mountain range in Tyrol, stretching across more than 730 square kilometers of wild terrain. The landscape features rocky peaks, deep forests, open meadows, clear streams, and steep valleys that create a varied natural setting for outdoor exploration.
The area has been protected since 1928 and is one of the oldest protected reserves in Europe with roots reaching back centuries. Ancient trade routes once crossed these mountains and several of these historic paths remain open today as hiking trails.
The park draws hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who spend time walking trails and enjoying the mountain air and quiet surroundings. Seasonal activities from summer hiking to winter snowshoeing show how people connect with and use this natural space throughout the year.
Choose trails based on the season since summer and winter offer very different conditions and landscapes in the park. Marked paths range from easy walks to challenging mountain routes, and visitor centers provide maps and guidance to help plan your visit.
Within the park lies the Great Maple Forest with about 2000 ancient mountain maple trees, many several hundred years old. In autumn the foliage turns brilliant shades of yellow and red, creating a striking seasonal display that draws visitors from across the region.
