Musée Jean Lurçat
The Musée Jean Lurçat is an art museum housed in an old castle overlooking the town of Saint-Laurent-les-Tours. The castle contains the artist's workshop, textile works, drawings, and personal items that show how Lurçat worked with different materials and techniques.
The castle was used for centuries by the Turenne family as a stronghold before Lurçat purchased it in 1941 and transformed it into his home and source of inspiration. The site is now classified as a Monument historique and Maison des illustres, underscoring its importance in French art history.
The name Jean Lurçat represents the revival of tapestry art in the 20th century. Visitors see a home designed as a work of art itself, with painted ceilings, stars and imaginative figures on the walls that reflect the artist's passion for creative craft.
The museum is open from April to November and offers both free visits and guided tours that explain the castle's history and the artist's life. Parking is available nearby, dogs are allowed in the gardens, and the grounds are partly accessible for visitors with mobility needs.
The ceilings and walls of the castle are decorated with stars, suns, moons and imaginary figures that Lurçat painted directly into the architecture. This personal design of the space shows how the artist transformed every place where he lived into a living work of art.
