The Museum of Modern Art Wakayama, Art museum in Fukiage, Wakayama, Japan

The Museum of Modern Art Wakayama is an art museum in the Fukiage area near Wakayama Castle. Designed by architect Kurokawa Kisho in 1994, it holds over 10,000 works including prints, paintings, and sculptures by local and international artists such as Picasso and Redon.

The museum opened in 1963 as the Wakayama Prefecture Museum inside the castle grounds and became the Museum of Modern Art in 1970. The move to its current building in 1994 allowed for a better presentation of the collection and strengthened its role in the modern art scene.

The museum displays works by artists connected to Wakayama, reflecting the local creative tradition. Visitors can see how the region has shaped modern Japanese art, especially through its important printmaking heritage.

The museum is reachable by bus from main train stations in about ten minutes, and parking nearby is free for the first two hours. Plan your visit since it closes on Mondays and opens in the afternoon.

The building was designed by Kurokawa Kisho and mirrors the architecture of the nearby castle, featuring a roof shaped like a sword and a large lantern at the entrance. The landscaped grounds outside are inspired by the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.
