Real World Studios, Recording studio in Box, Wiltshire, England
Real World Studios is a recording facility in Box, Wiltshire, housed in a historic mill building over 200 years old that was converted for music production. The complex includes the Big Room with a large mixing console overlooking ponds and gardens, the smaller Wood Room, a rehearsal space, a Foley stage, and private workspaces.
Peter Gabriel, the former lead singer of Genesis, founded the studio in 1989 to create an innovative space for music production. The building itself was originally a water mill over 200 years old, carefully renovated and adapted to meet the needs of modern recording.
Peter Gabriel created this space to bring musicians from different cultures together and encourage collaboration across musical traditions. The studio is connected to the WOMAD Festival, which celebrates world music and helps sounds from many countries reach wider audiences.
The studio is a private facility, but visits are possible when arranged in advance through special tours or events. The location is rural and surrounded by nature, offering a calm setting that supports focused work while also providing a relaxing experience for visitors.
Beyond music recording, the studio works on film scores and sound design, including projects like James Bond films and other major productions. This versatility shows how the space was designed to handle different types of audio work beyond traditional music recording.
