Tauchgondel, Tourist attraction in Grömitz, Germany

The Tauchgondel is a round, metal gondola attached to the end of the seafront pier in Grömitz that carries visitors below the surface of the Baltic Sea without getting them wet. Large windows surround the inside, giving a direct view of fish, crabs, algae, and other sea life at a depth of about 3.5 meters (11 feet).

The Tauchgondel in Grömitz is one of only three similar structures built along the German Baltic Sea coast, with the others found in Zinnowitz and Sellin. This type of attraction developed as a new form of nature-based coastal tourism, offering access to the underwater world without requiring any diving skills.

The guides on board speak in a relaxed and often humorous way about the food chain and the creatures of the Baltic Sea. Children are encouraged to ask questions, and the crew takes time to answer each one.

The gondola sits at the end of the pier on the Kurpromenade in Grömitz and is easy to reach on foot. Operations can be suspended during storms or icy conditions, so it is worth checking ahead if the weather looks uncertain.

The gondola weighs around 45 tons, which is what allows it to hold steady against the pressure of the surrounding seawater. It can also be rented for private ceremonies, and some couples have chosen it for a wedding or vow renewal with fish and crabs as their only witnesses.
