Old chapel of the Augustinian convent, Former convent chapel in Honfleur, France
The ancienne chapelle du couvent des Augustines is a former convent chapel in the center of Honfleur, in northern France. It has two original rooms with stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and old windows that have kept the building close to its first form.
The building once belonged to a convent of Augustinian nuns who had settled in Honfleur. In 1924, after a time in the town hall's wedding room and attic, the chapel was turned into a museum for art and local history.
The former Augustinian convent chapel in Honfleur now serves as an exhibition space for local art and history. The stone walls and vaulted ceilings give the room a weight that makes looking at paintings and sculptures feel different from a standard gallery.
The chapel is in the center of Honfleur and easy to reach on foot from most points in town. Inside, the rooms are small, so it is worth taking your time to notice the details of the old stonework and windows.
In the 1970s, a new wing was built next to the chapel to display more works without touching the old rooms. The two original chapel rooms were left as they were, which is why walking through them still feels very different from the newer part.
