Between the cannons, Historic site in Lisbon, Portugal
Entre les canons is a historic site in Lisbon, Portugal, connected to the medieval siege of the city. The ground still shows traces of attack trenches and positions where siege machines were once set up against the city walls.
The site played a key role during the siege of Lisbon in 1147, when crusaders on their way to the Holy Land helped take the city from Muslim rule. For several weeks, the assault on the walls was coordinated from this position.
Entre les canons draws visitors who want to understand how medieval siege warfare actually worked in practice. Explanatory panels on site help trace each phase of the attack, making it easier to read the landscape while walking through it.
The site sits in the historic center of Lisbon and is easy to reach on foot while exploring the surrounding medieval neighborhoods. A morning visit tends to be quieter, which makes it easier to look at the remains without crowds.
The name Entre les canons is in French, a reminder that part of the crusaders who took part in the siege came from what is now France. Their presence is also why some of the accounts of the siege were written in French rather than Latin or Portuguese.
