Talbot Square Gardens, Garden in City of Westminster, London

Talbot Square Gardens is a small garden in the City of Westminster, London, enclosed on three sides by residential houses and open on one side to Sussex Gardens. Two mature London plane trees shade the lawns, and a weeping ash sits at the center of a circular paved area with a bench around it.

The garden was laid out after 1842 on the site of a former underground water reservoir that once supplied the growing city. During the Second World War, the original iron railings were removed for the war effort and replaced with chain link fencing, until a major restoration in 2008 and 2009 brought back traditional railings and new planting.

The garden is surrounded by listed houses, which gives the whole square a consistent and recognizable look. A metal arch marks the main entrance from Sussex Gardens, framing the space in a way that feels deliberate and inviting.

The garden is accessible from Sussex Gardens and is within walking distance of both Paddington and Lancaster Gate tube stations. It opens early in the morning and closes at dusk, making it easy to visit at most times of day.

The ground beneath the garden still sits directly above the old reservoir, which is why the soil can feel noticeably damp after rain. The whole area was part of Tyburnia, a planned 19th-century housing development where George Gutch designed the street grid around a series of garden squares like this one.
