Château Hôtel du Colombier, Hotel in Saint-Malo, France
The Château Hôtel du Colombier is a hotel housed in an 18th-century manor set within a large park with a pond, a rose garden, and a small chapel, a short drive from the beaches of Saint-Malo. The building has kept many of its original features, including wooden wall panels, a grand central staircase, and paintings from the period.
The building was constructed in 1715 by a shipowner from Saint-Malo and served for a long time as a private residence. It was later converted into a hotel and restaurant and classified as a four-star establishment, with much of its original architecture left intact.
The Château Hôtel du Colombier is run by its owner Nicolas, who makes a point of greeting guests personally, giving the place the feeling of a private home rather than a standard hotel. The restaurant, set in the former salon, serves seasonal dishes that draw from local Breton products and other influences.
The hotel sits outside the center of Saint-Malo, so having a car or a bike is useful for reaching the beaches and the old town; bike rental is available on site. Guests planning to arrive after 10 pm should let the hotel know in advance so that reception can be ready.
The property also has self-catering gîtes on the grounds, offering families or groups more independence than a standard hotel room. The restaurant requires advance booking for special dinners, as the menu changes regularly based on season and local availability.
