Saint-Jean Park, Park in Clermont-Ferrand, France
Parc Saint-Jean is a public park in the Saint-Jean neighborhood of Clermont-Ferrand, France, built on the site of the former slaughterhouse. It features a central wooden promenade with bleachers, an open-air stage, play areas for children, open lawns, and a wild grove crossed by a footbridge.
The land where the park now stands was once home to the city's slaughterhouses. As part of a broader urban renewal project in the Saint-Jean neighborhood, the site was transformed and opened to the public as a green space.
Along the paths, twelve poetic gates designed by artist Élise Gabriel invite visitors to invent their own route through the park. Children and adults alike can move through the space in their own way, following curiosity rather than a set direction.
The park is open to all ages, with areas for children, families, and adults who want to play games like pétanque. On warm days, shaded benches with a misting system offer a cool spot to rest.
More than 270 residents and schoolchildren took part in planting the trees and plants across the park. The rainwater drainage relies on a large infiltration basin that is designed to blend into the landscape as a natural feature.
