Jazan, City in southwestern Saudi Arabia
Jazan is a coastal city in the far southwest of Saudi Arabia, sitting along the Red Sea close to the border with Yemen. It combines a working waterfront with fishing boats and a port with green mountains, wadis, and farmland stretching inland.
Jazan served as a trading port for ships crossing the Red Sea for many centuries, growing into a regional center for commerce and fishing over time. The Ottoman period left a visible mark, seen most clearly on the Farasan Islands, where a castle and old mosques from that era still stand.
The corniche along the Red Sea is where people gather in the evenings for walks and to watch the sunset over the offshore islands. The local food reflects the city's position between the sea and the mountains, mixing fresh fish, slow-cooked meat dishes, and lightly spiced coffee grown nearby in the Fayfa Mountains.
A rental car is the most convenient way to get around, especially for reaching the mountains, wadis, and coastal spots outside the city. The cooler months from November to February make outdoor visits much more comfortable, while summer can be very hot and humid.
Unlike most of Saudi Arabia, the rivers flowing through the mountains around Jazan run all year, keeping the landscape green even in summer. The Fayfa Mountains nearby are covered in terraced fields where coffee and pomegranates have been grown for centuries, making this corner of the country look quite different from the rest.
