MAC's (Musée des Arts Contemporains) is a contemporary art museum in Hornu, Boussu, Belgium, housed inside the historic buildings of the Grand-Hornu site. The exhibition spaces occupy renovated industrial halls with high ceilings, large windows, and brick walls that give plenty of room to artworks of all formats.
The Grand-Hornu site was built in the early 19th century as a coal mine and workers' town, and was one of the most forward-looking industrial complexes of its time in Europe. After mining ended, the site fell into disrepair for decades before being restored in the 1970s and eventually opened for cultural use.
MAC's sits within the Grand-Hornu site, a former coal mine that is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old brick buildings serve as a backdrop for contemporary art exhibitions, creating a contrast between industrial history and modern creativity that visitors can feel as they walk through.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter, though the first Sunday of each month draws more visitors as entry is free on that day.
A ticket to MAC's also grants access to the CID (Centre for Innovation and Design), which sits on the same grounds. Visitors who arrive by train on the same day and show their rail ticket can enter the museum for free.
