Ilha dos Lençóis, Coastal island near Cururupu, Maranhão, Brazil
Ilha dos Lençóis is a small island off the coast of Cururupu, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. It has wide sandy beaches, shallow water near the shore, and almost no buildings or roads.
The island has long been a base for local fishing communities, who used its sheltered waters for generations. Over time, it gradually became known beyond the region as a place to step away from city life.
The island's daily life revolves around fishing, and small, brightly painted boats line the shore. Visitors can watch fishermen at work and sometimes buy fresh fish directly on the beach.
The island is only reachable by small boat, usually from Cururupu or nearby coastal villages. There are no shops on the island, so bring water, food, and sun protection before boarding.
The name Lençóis means "bed sheets" in Portuguese, referring to the wide white sand flats that from above resemble sheets spread out on the ground. These flats shift slightly in shape depending on the tides and the season.
