Teatro aikštė is a cobblestone garden square and pedestrian zone in the center of Klaipėda, Lithuania. It sits near Teatro Street, surrounded by low historical buildings that give the space a contained, open-air feel.
From the 18th century onward, this site was a busy trading area where butchers sold their goods and, later, a fish market operated with fishermen selling directly from their boats. In the 19th century, part of the castle moat was filled in to expand the market, and a covered market hall was built after the stalls were removed around 1860.
The square is a natural meeting point in the center of Klaipėda, where locals gather after work or simply walk through the cobbled lanes. Open-air events like the International Castle Jazz Festival and the Sea Festival regularly take place here, drawing crowds from across the city.
The square is easy to reach on foot and sits in the heart of the old town, making it a convenient stop when exploring the area around it. During events and in summer, arriving early helps find a comfortable spot before the crowds gather.
Traveling actors are said to have performed here as far back as the 17th century, long before the space became a formal market. This early link to performance may be why the square still carries the name Teatro today.
