Vodena Peca, Cave in Bajagić, Croatia
Vodena Peca is a cave near the village of Bajagić in Croatia, and its name means 'Water Cave' in Croatian. It has a main canal about 330 feet (100 meters) long lined with stalactites and stalagmites, and a second, more demanding canal that drops into a deep vertical pit.
The cave has been part of local stories for generations, and people in the area once used it for shelter or storage. Today it is known as a natural site open to visitors and cavers.
Sturdy shoes and a flashlight are essential, as the floor is uneven and can be wet in places. The second canal with its deep pit is only for experienced cavers with proper gear.
The cave shelters greater horseshoe bats during winter, which hang quietly from the ceiling while hibernating. Visitors who come in winter can see these rare animals at rest, clinging to the rock above.
