Phare de Port-la-Nouvelle, Lighthouse in Port-la-Nouvelle, France
The Phare de Port-la-Nouvelle is a lighthouse on the Mediterranean coast in the Aude department of southern France, standing at the entrance of the port of Port-la-Nouvelle. The white cylindrical tower is clearly visible from the quays and sends out regular light signals at night to help ships navigate safely into the harbor.
The current tower was built after World War II, as the original lighthouse had been dynamited in 1944 to prevent its use by enemy forces. After the war, the lighthouse was rebuilt and its light was put back into service in 1948.
The lighthouse is not open to visitors and cannot be entered. It is best seen from the shoreline or the quays, especially around dusk when the light begins to flash.
A separate lighthouse that once marked the northern jetty of the harbor, known as the 'Green Lighthouse', was an 8-meter concrete structure that was dismantled in 2021 to make way for port expansion works. It had guided ships into the harbor for around 70 years before it disappeared.
