Groapa Ruginoasă - Valea Seacă, Erosion ravine in Pietroasa, Romania

Groapa Ruginoasă is a large erosion ravine in the Apuseni Mountains, near Arieșeni, at around 4,600 feet (1,400 m) above sea level. It spans over 600 meters across and reaches nearly 330 feet (100 m) deep, divided into four main sections separated by sharp ridges, with a small stream running through narrow gorges at the bottom.

The ravine formed through intense water erosion that gradually wore away the rock over time. Early maps showed only a small hollow of less than 200 meters across at this location, which shows how fast the formation has grown.

Groapa Ruginoasă is protected as a natural reserve within the Apuseni Natural Park, recognized for its geological value. Visitors walking around the rim can see the contrast between the surrounding pine forest and the red and violet rock walls exposed by erosion.

The trail starts at the Vârtop saddle and is marked with a yellow sign near a small stream crossing. The climb takes around 40 minutes and includes wooden and stone steps with handrails that make the path safer in wet or snowy conditions.

The bottom of the ravine is only accessible to expert climbers, as the gorges at the center are so narrow that the walls almost touch. The name Ruginoasă means 'rusty' in Romanian, a reference to the red and violet quartzite layers that give the rock its color.
