Svanemølle Beach, Sand beach in Copenhagen, Denmark
Svanemølle Strand is a sand beach on the northern edge of Copenhagen, stretching along the harbor bay. A wooden pier about 430 feet (130 meters) long reaches into the water, offering swimmers direct access and open views toward the sea.
The beach was renovated and reopened in June 2010 after years of planning and development work. The project brought new sand, a new pier, and improved facilities to a stretch of coastline that had long been part of the city's waterfront.
The beach is open year-round, but lifeguards are only on duty from mid-June through the end of August. After heavy rain, a red flag may be raised to signal that swimming is temporarily not recommended.
The bay water is cleaned using underground tanks that shine intense ultraviolet light to kill bacteria without any chemicals. In winter, a local cold-water swimming club uses the site and has built a sauna there with views toward the Swedish coast.
