Eagle is an aerial tramway at Arthurs Seat on the Mornington Peninsula in Australia, running from a base station in Dromana up to the top of the hill. The all-weather cabins have large windows and move slowly over the tree canopy, offering views across the bay toward Melbourne on a clear day.
A chairlift first opened at Arthurs Seat in the 1960s, giving visitors an easy way to reach the top of the hill. The current gondola system opened in 2016, replacing the old chairlift that had been closed for several years.
The gondolas of the Eagle are named after the Wedge-tailed Eagle, a bird that appears in local Aboriginal stories. That connection runs through the whole site and gives the ride a meaning that goes beyond just the view.
The ride can be joined from either station, so it is easy to go up and walk down or arrive on foot and take the gondola back. The site is accessible for wheelchair users, and the parking at the base is free of charge.
The gondola cabins can be detached individually from the cable while passengers board, which means the whole system does not need to stop for each group. This makes boarding calmer and easier, especially for families or anyone who needs a little more time to get settled.
