El Pópulo, Neighbourhood in Cádiz, Spain

El Pópulo is a medieval neighborhood in the historic center of Cádiz, in southern Spain. Its streets are among the narrowest in the city, lined with stone facades, small balconies, and three surviving arched gateways that once marked the entrance to the fortified enclosure.

El Pópulo developed in the medieval period as a walled enclosure protecting the city's population, built over an earlier Roman settlement. The three stone arches that survive today, Arco de los Blancos, Arco de la Rosa, and Arco del Pópulo, are the most visible remnants of that fortified layout.

El Pópulo has long been a meeting place for the chirigotas, the comic singing groups that are central to the Carnival of Cádiz. During the festival, the narrow streets fill with people in costume, and the sound of improvised songs echoes off the old stone walls.

The neighborhood is walkable only on foot since the lanes are too narrow for vehicles, and sturdy shoes are helpful on the uneven cobblestones. Going in the morning gives more space to move around freely and notice the architectural details without large groups of visitors nearby.

The church of Santa Cruz, standing within the neighborhood, served as the first cathedral of Cádiz during the medieval period before losing that role to a later building. From the outside, it looks like an ordinary parish church, which makes its former status easy to overlook.
