Faneromeni Monastery, Monastery in Frini Lefkada, Greece
Faneromeni Monastery is an Orthodox monastery on a hill in Frini Lefkada, Greece, overlooking the northern coast of the island and the mainland across the water. The grounds include a church, a courtyard with stone paths, a museum holding religious icons and manuscripts, and a small library.
The monastery was founded in 1634 on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis, and it was renewed during the 18th century under Venetian rule. Two fires damaged it seriously over the years, but the monastic community rebuilt it each time.
Faneromeni Monastery is seen as the protector of Lefkada, and locals come here for religious festivals and personal moments of faith. Inside the courtyard, visitors can watch people light candles and pause before old icons painted in the Byzantine style.
Modest dress is required to enter the monastery, and clothes are available at the entrance for visitors who need them. From the eastern gate, there is a direct view of Agios Ioannis beach, which makes it easy to combine the visit with a trip to the shore.
Within the monastery grounds, there is a small zoo with animals, which is unusual for a religious site. There is also a tavern where visitors can eat and drink on the monastery grounds themselves.
