Morro Jable Lighthouse, Lighthouse in Pájara, Spain
The Morro Jable Lighthouse is a white lighthouse on the southern tip of Fuerteventura, in the municipality of Pájara, standing near Playa del Matorral beach. It rises above a rocky shoreline and can be seen clearly from the surrounding coast.
The lighthouse was built in the late 19th century to warn ships of shallow waters and rocks along the southern coast of Fuerteventura. It has kept its original form since then and continues to serve the same purpose today.
The lighthouse stands next to a protected salt flat area that supports coastal birds and plants visitors can observe during a walk. This connection between the sea and the land around it is something that local people have long understood and respected.
The lighthouse can be reached on foot from Playa del Matorral beach, and the coastal path leading there is easy to walk. The interior is not open to visitors, but the outside of the tower and the surrounding area are freely accessible.
Just next to the lighthouse sits one of the few remaining active salt flat areas on Fuerteventura, something many visitors walk past without noticing. These flats are officially protected and serve as a resting point for migratory birds passing through the island.
