Ullals de Baltasar, Wetland near Amposta, Spain

Ullals de Baltasar is a freshwater wetland near the town of Amposta, in the Delta de l'Ebre region of northeastern Spain. It is made up of around 50 natural spring pools of varying sizes, bordered by eucalyptus trees, reeds, and patches of water lilies.

The land became officially protected in 2009 when the Delta de l'Ebre park management bought the Ullals de Baltasar estate. Before that, it was privately owned and used mainly for fishing and hunting.

The wetland sits within the Delta de l'Ebre natural park, a area where rice farming and water management have long shaped the land. Walking the paths, visitors can see how flooded rice paddies and open water pools exist side by side.

The site is best explored on foot along the paths that wind around the spring pools. The ground can be wet or muddy depending on the season, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.

Some of the spring pools at Ullals de Baltasar reach depths of around 9 meters (30 feet), even though they can look shallow from the surface. The water feeding these springs does not come from local rain but from precipitation that fell on distant ranges like the Montsia and the Ports mountains.
