Sokcho Beach, Beach in Sokcho-si, South Korea

Sokcho Beach is a sandy beach on South Korea's northeast coast, in Sokcho-si, facing the East Sea. It sits close to the city's bus terminal, with many hotels within walking distance of the shoreline.

Sokcho-si grew as a fishing port on the east coast during the 20th century, and the beach became a popular day trip destination for people traveling from Seoul. Over time, the development of bus routes between Seoul and Sokcho helped make it one of the most visited spots on the northeast coast.

Small stalls along the boardwalk sell grilled squid and fresh seafood prepared on open grills, drawing in passersby with the smell of cooking. In the evening, lanterns light up these stalls, giving the whole strip a local, lived-in feel.

Swimming is only permitted during the supervised summer season, when lifeguards and safety buoys are in place. Outside that period, the beach is still open for walking and photography, and early mornings are good for watching the sunrise over the water.

Because the beach faces east with no land blocking the horizon, the sun rises directly over the water and can be seen from the shore without moving far from the hotels. This makes Sokcho one of the few places in Korea where watching the sunrise over the sea is genuinely easy to do on the first morning of a trip.
