The Goseong Unification Observatory is an observation tower in 현내면, South Korea, positioned to face directly north toward the border with North Korea. From the top, visitors can see the mountains on the North Korean side and, on clear days, the East Sea stretching along the horizon.
The tower opened at the end of 2018, replacing an older structure that had stood on the same site. The Korean War in the early 1950s drew the border that made this observation point possible and meaningful.
To reach the tower, visitors must first stop at the Unification Security Park near the Jejin Checkpoint, show a valid ID, and attend a short security briefing before driving the remaining stretch to the site. Coming by car or rental vehicle makes the process much easier, and an early start helps ensure enough time for all the steps.
The tower sits at the northernmost point in South Korea where civilians are allowed access, putting it within sight of Geumgangsan, a mountain on the North Korean side that holds deep meaning in Korean culture. On clear days, distant military checkpoints on the North Korean side are sometimes visible from the viewing platform.
