Kobe Suma Sea World, Public aquarium in Suma-ku, Kobe, Japan
Kobe Suma Sea World is a public aquarium in the Suma-ku district of Kobe, which opened in June 2024. It features an Orca Stadium, a Dolphin Stadium, an underwater glass tunnel, and areas where penguins, sea lions, and other marine animals are on display.
The site has a long history as a place for observing sea life, with roots in the Kobe Municipal Suma Aquarium, which first opened in 1957. The current facility opened in 2024 as a successor to that earlier institution.
At the Orca Stadium, visitors gather early to claim good seats before the shows begin. The first eight rows are known as the splash zone, and ponchos are sold inside because the waves are large.
The nearest train stations are Suma Kaihin Koen and Tsukimiyama, both about a 10-minute walk away. Buying tickets in advance is recommended to avoid waiting, and arriving early gives enough time to catch all the shows.
A section called Suma Collection displays stained glass windows and specimens from the 1957 aquarium, keeping a physical connection to the original site. A baby sea lion born in 2025 has also become one of the most popular sights in the facility.
