독생이코지, Beach and tourist attraction in Cheju, South Korea

독생이코지 is a coastal headland on the eastern side of Jeju Island, South Korea, in the Sinyang-ri area of Seongsan-eup. The promontory extends into the sea along a path that passes black volcanic rock formations, a red cinder cone called Bulle-oreum, and a white lighthouse at the tip.

The stone beacon Hyeopja Yeondae on the hilltop is one of the oldest structures in the area and shows that this stretch of coast was used for maritime surveillance long before modern times. The headland became a popular destination for visitors after Jeju developed as a travel destination in the latter half of the 20th century.

The name 독생이코지 comes from the Jeju dialect, where 'koji' means 'tip' or 'end', referring to land that juts out into the sea. On the flat hilltop stands an old stone beacon called Hyeopja Yeondae, once used to send fire signals, and still visible today as a reminder of how the coast was once watched over.

The path along the headland is easy to walk for most visitors, though some sections near the cinder cone become steeper. Wind can pick up in the afternoon, so bringing a light layer is a good idea, especially outside of summer.

The red cinder cone Bulle-oreum is covered in volcanic ash that gives it a deep reddish tone, which stands out clearly against the dark basalt around it. This color contrast is something visitors often notice but rarely expect before arriving.
