Yeosu Geumodo Bireong-gil, Hiking trail on Geumodo Island, South Korea
Yeosu Geumodo Bireong-gil is a coastal hiking trail that follows the cliff edges of Geumodo Island, near Yeosu. The path winds through small fishing villages and past rock formations that drop sharply into the sea.
The name Bireong-gil comes from a local word meaning cliff, which reflects the steep coastal sections that define the route. Geumodo Island was for a long time restricted and difficult to reach, which kept it largely untouched for generations.
The trail starts near Hamgumi village and is divided into sections that can be walked separately. The ground is mostly flat but uneven in places, so sturdy shoes are a good idea.
At certain points along the trail, wooden fences allow you to look straight down at the cliffs below, giving an unusual angle on the steeper sections. The village of Jikpo also has pine trees that have grown for over 300 years, standing close to a small beach at the end of one of the trail sections.
