Iznik Castle, Historic fortress ruins in Iznik, Turkey
Iznik Castle is an ancient fortress built during the Roman period, with stone walls and towers that still overlook the town of Iznik in northwestern Turkey. Several sections of the walls remain standing, showing layers of construction from different periods.
The fortress was first built in the late Roman period and later expanded by the Byzantines to defend the city then known as Nicaea. After the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century, parts of the structure were further altered.
The ruins are easy to reach on foot from the center of Iznik, and visiting in the morning offers good light for seeing the stonework. The ground is uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea when walking along the old walls.
Some sections of the walls were built using stones taken from earlier Greek structures of the Hellenistic period, a practice that is still visible in places where different materials are mixed together. This reuse of older building material gives the site an unexpected layering of eras that few visitors notice at first glance.
