Katerini Municipal Park, park in Katerini, Greece
Katerini Municipal Park is a leafy public green area right in the center of the city, with a network of walking paths, a playground, a small zoo, ponds, and an open-air theater. Tall plane trees shade many of the benches and lawns, giving the whole place a relaxed and orderly feel.
The area was used as an Ottoman military exercise ground before Katerini became part of Greece, and it later changed into a public park. Two old cannons on the north side and several monuments inside still point back to that military past and to later national commemorations.
The open-air theater hosts local concerts, school plays, and dance shows, so the park often feels like the city’s shared backyard stage. Around the paths, people sit on benches, watch the ducks, and use the chess tables and outdoor sports corners as casual gathering spots.
You can enter the park at any time and walk through its main paths without any admission procedure. Most areas are flat and easy to navigate, though some corners near the ponds and trees can stay damp after rain.
Inside the park there is a small zoo where deer move around and different birds fly within their enclosures, which surprises many first-time visitors. The park also keeps outdoor tables for table tennis, Teqball, and chess, making it much more active than a typical green space.
