Pista Cláudio Coutinho, Walking path in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Pista Cláudio Coutinho is a walking path in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that runs along the coast at the foot of Urca Hill. The path is about 1.25 km long and starts at the left end of Praia Vermelha, passing by the entrance to the Sugarloaf cable car station.
The path was named after Cláudio Coutinho, a physical trainer and football coach who led the Brazilian national team in the 1970s and died in 1981. In 2006, the area around the path became part of a natural monument to protect the landscape.
The path is also known as Caminho do Bem-te-vi, a name that comes from the bird often seen and heard along the way. Local residents and visitors use the path for walks and jogging, and it is a common spot to watch the sunset over the bay.
The path is free to enter and is managed by the Brazilian Army, so it is best to visit during daylight hours. The trail is mostly flat and easy to follow, but some parts are uneven, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
The rocks along the path are among the oldest in Rio, formed over hundreds of millions of years. They are part of a geological formation that dates back to the time when the continents were joined together.
