Pézenas, Medieval town center in Hérault, France
Pézenas is a medieval town in the Hérault department, located south of Montpellier, with narrow cobblestone streets and stone houses from past centuries. The facades of the old buildings show many carved stone faces worked into the walls.
In the 17th century, the Estates General of Languedoc province gathered here, making the town a center for regional political decisions. These assemblies attracted nobles and merchants and shaped the townscape with their mansions.
The Theater of Pézenas, transformed from a church in 1803, continues to present performances and maintains a connection to playwright Molière's legacy. The link to the French playwright shapes the cultural life of the town to this day.
The Saturday morning market fills the streets with regional products, while craft shops in the old town remain open throughout the week. The lanes in the historic core are easy to explore on foot.
A large wooden horse, called the Poulain, is carried through the streets during festivals and recalls the visit of King Louis VIII in 1226. This tradition brings the lanes to life each year with music and dance.
