Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Medieval church in Záběhlice, Czech Republic.
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Záběhlice combines Gothic and Romanesque building elements with a Neo-Romanesque tower constructed between 1876 and 1880. The interior holds a notable altarpiece from 1861 depicting the Virgin Mary.
The church was founded in 1125 and underwent major reconstruction in the 14th century incorporating both Romanesque and Gothic features. The original tower was destroyed by lightning in the 19th century and subsequently rebuilt.
The name refers to the Virgin Mary, whose birth is celebrated in this religious space where locals have gathered for centuries. The bells that ring from the tower create a familiar sound marking time in the neighborhood.
The church is located in Záběhlice on the eastern side of Prague and operates under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Prague. Visitors can enter during service times, with the site easily reached on foot from public transport stops.
Three historic bells cast in 1876 and 1889 hang within the tower and ring at set times throughout the day. The oldest bell set dates to 1876, while the newest one was added nearly a decade later.
