Hasištejn Castle, Gothic castle ruin in Мисто, Czech Republic.
Hasištejn Castle is a medieval castle ruin in Bohemia, Czech Republic, set on a rocky outcrop near the town of Kadaň. The site retains several Gothic towers and stretches of outer wall that give a clear sense of the original layout.
The castle was founded in the 13th century to guard a trade route between Bohemia and Saxony, and it passed through the hands of the Bohemian crown and several noble families over the following centuries. It gradually fell into ruin after being abandoned, and large parts of the structure were lost over time.
The name Hasištejn comes from the noble family that lived here for generations and left a strong mark on the place. Today visitors can walk among the towers and get a close look at the spaces that were once part of daily castle life.
The site is generally open from spring through autumn, and visiting outside those months may not be possible. The ground is uneven and sloped in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before you set out.
The castle was once home to Bohuslav Hasištejn of Lobkowicz, one of the most respected Czech humanist poets of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, who built up one of the largest private libraries in Bohemia here. This made the site a meeting point for scholars from across Central Europe during his lifetime.
